I actually heard a thing on Rick Steves's travel show the other day related to this. He was in a cab, stuck in traffic in Iran and his cabbie slapped the steering wheel and said "Ahh, death to traffic!" Steves asked him about that, and the guy explained that saying "death to [X]" is more of an expression of exasperation and frustration.
Death to the guy who blocks the subway doors. Death to people who don't use their turn signals. Death to whomever invented the press release. Death to those who overuse hyperbole.
