With George Carlin gone, the question might be raised as to who is the top comedian out there these days. But more and more I don't know if that is a question that can truly be answered. There are so many different forms of comedy these days, so many unique mediums to get laughter, that it's hard to just draw one blank line and declare it right.
For example -- in terms of working, touring stand-ups who aren't necessarily household names yet, I've been the most taken lately with Dave Attell. Dave's one of those pure comedy club kind of guys who's best work is so caustic that he doesn't really translate that well into TV or movies (Kinison was like that, and his career faired pretty well I think).
But no matter how much a Dave Attell, Chris Rock, Patton Oswalt, Brian Posehn, Margaret Cho, Aisha Tyler, or Greg Giraldo entertains an audience, are they really on a level that can fairly be compared with the work that John Stewart is doing?
Still, when you think about the guys who've been at it the longest. The guys who've found success in every possible medium, who's skill enables them to entertain little kids and drunken club-goers alike, the guys who've never compromised their core act just because it wasn't popular at a given time. When you think about the one person who you just know is gonna make you laugh when he comes on the screen..
